Accept People Where They Are

Jesus had an ability to readily accept people “where they are” ….and to not be moved by stereotypical ideas concerning them.  The Word of God teaches this particular characteristic which Jesus demonstrated so compassionately. What a beautiful aspect of His character! He ate with tax collectors (people of His day who were known to cheat and steal from the people) and sinners. He even used examples in His teachings which included harlots…prostitutes…people who the Jewish law said were to be stoned. He loved people from every region and culture and tribe. He did not limit His love and fellowship only to those who fulfilled some “religious set of rules and regulations”…or only those who were of “His group”. His condemnation was hottest against the ultra “religious scribes and Pharisees” who practiced prejudice and demonstrated open rejection against those who did not follow the Law perfectly….against all who were “different” than they were.

Because of the power of the HOLY SPIRIT which was both in and upon Him, Jesus had that remarkable ability to look on the “heart” of people….the “inside of the cup”…even before the “outside of the cup” of their lives was cleaned up. The “religious” people of all generations do not have that ability. Their vision is short sighted as they only seem able to “accept” those who are outwardly acceptable in the eyes of men…especially their own. They seem unable to walk in love and compassion with those who are “different” than themselves…unable to deal with the “messiness” of some people’s lives.

Jesus, the One whose life IS authentically righteous, characterized by the HOLY SPIRIT in His entire being….is able to willingly accept those who are “different” than Himself. He loves and willingly receives the unlovely, the downtrodden, the helpless, the weak, the sick, the dying, those whose customs, language, and dress may differ from His own.

It was this same HOLY SPIRIT within the “good Samaritan” who enabled Him to stop by the side of the road and show compassion and love to one who was very “different” than he. This same SPIRIT that tells us through Jesus’ words to “Go in to ALL THE WORLD and preach the gospel” –especially to those who are “different” than us.

“Jesus said, “ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself,”  Luke 10:27

Pride and fear stand in the way of our fellowshiping and socializing with people “different” than we are…but these sins are neutralized by the Blood of Jesus if we will just plunge them into that life-giving flood that still flows from Jesus’ heart today. Let Him wash you anew of your fears and prideful ideas that hold you back from reaching to those who are difficult OR “different” in your life. Humble yourselves at Jesus’ feet and ask for His HOLY boldness to face them.  Let Him fill you anew with the ONE POWER that can overcome all fear and pride…the HOLY SPIRIT. Receive that power…now!

We need not be afraid of speaking to people of the opposite gender…Jesus wasn’t. We need not be afraid of dealing with those who are not of our generation…Jesus wasn’t. He made a place in His heart for the young and the old alike. We need not be afraid of dealing with those who are not of our nationality or race…Jesus wasn’t…He loved Jews and Gentiles alike and died on the cross for ALL mankind.

Our God loves PEOPLE….all kinds of people, from ALL NATIONS. People who are different in many ways…but He calls ALL of us to “Come unto Him….and learn of Him and take His yoke upon ourselves…and He will give us rest in our souls” (mind, emotions, and will) from struggling with the “differences”in our lives. He will neutralize them and set us free from those roadblocks….by His Truth!

We can be free to flow in His truth and love by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT…but ONLY by that power! As we reflect on the beautiful character of Jesus….we see this precious aspect of His being…and as we humble ourselves at His feet and yield up our pride and fears about such things….they shall evaporate in the Presence of His Spirit that is HOLY and Eternal!

Purpose to find someone “different” than you and open your heart full of God’s love toward them!

  1. What a great message and very comforting to me. I really appreciate the way you presented this truth. Jesus always spoke the truth and by doing that, he offended everyone who hid in their sin. That is why they killed him.

God bless you as you work for Christ!
