WAIT TRAINING: Part 4, Change and the Fear of the Lord

The words which God gives are always definite!  They are specific and exact.  The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit always speak the same thing!  They always “say what they mean, and mean what they say!”  There is great comfort in such consistency.  This is completely characteristic of our Holy God who changes not! (Hebrews 13:8). Circumstance, time, and eternity – none of these things move Him!

162833342748006852_TAXR9O4O_fAn interesting and consistent command to us from our changeless God is that we are to change!  We are to be transformed from the flesh we are are…to the SPIRIT HE IS!  To make that vital transformation, we must undergo a process of training.  Part of that necessary training which causes “us to decrease and Him to increase” is something we cover in this study!  (John 3:30)  As God’s people, we need to understand the importance of the need for change in our lives.  It is not something God decided to do to make things hard for us; but rather in His love and wisdom, He realized the truth which some have yet to learn.  Our willingness to submit to necessary change in our lives is directly related to our “fear of the Lord!”

“God, Who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them – men who never change their ways and have no fear of God!”  Psalms 55:19 (NIV)

To not “fear God” is, in itself, a death sentence!  Proverbs 1:7 clearly reveals that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”!  Psalms 111:10 adds that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom!”  If God’s people truly “perish for lack of knowledge”, as Hosea 4:6 declares; and if God’s command in Proverbs 4:5 is to “Get wisdom!  Get understanding!” still stands…then it seems clear that man’s obedience to CHANGE (to be spiritually transformed and develop progressively in the life of the spirit via obedience to His Word and purpose) is still the proper response of the one who lives life appropriately in the true “fear of the Lord!”

It is not God who is transformed…but rather, US!  Without change, we are of no spiritual use to the Master in this life. Without it, we will never truly “know Him” as the Apostle Paul cried out to be able to do in Philippians 3:8-12.  Without this progressive growth and development which is evidence of change from a life of being led by our flesh…to one of being led by out spirit, we prove in practice that we do not actually walk in the “fear of the Lord!”  If we truly hear and obey the Lord’s call to this, His appointed change will be evident in our “ways” – our behavior.  It would be loss enough to be sentenced to a life without God’s knowledge and wisdom; but the individual who hears of it and still refuses to yield to change, (or lazily neglects to do so), forfeits yet some other valuable Godly benefits.  Pay attention to the list which follows.

The “fear of the Lord’ is a familiar theme of David in the Psalms.  He has been described as “a man after God’s own heart”.  As David spoke of the fear of the Lord, he repeatedly told what one could expect as a result of living in this holy fear.  He said “the the fear of the Lord is clean.  The Lord honors them, is upon them, is with them and is round about them that fear the Lord.  There is no want or lack to them.  He is a banner over them, and the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting to them that fear Him. He is a companion to and takes pleasure in those who fear Him, and He blesses them.  They will be glad that fear Him.  He even said that the SECRET of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He makes His covenant known to THEM!” (Psalms 19:9, 25:14, 33:18, 34:7 & 9, 60:4, 103:11, 115:13, 119:63 & 74, and 147:11).  What BENEFITS and PRIVILEGES!

This Godly fear is descriptive of the true worshiper who 129478558006631345_u50twnRU_c“worships Him in spirit and in truth” John 4:24.  Such worship is an awesome, holy respect for Almighty God, and it is life-giving and sanctifying.  It is representative of an attitude that hates wickedness and takes a firm stand amid the tide of evil that has been unleashed upon this earth.  The fear of the Lord stands out and results in a quality of heart that is decisively different from those who do not fear Him.  These God-fearers have submitted themselves unto God for a changed nature; and when they resist the enemy...he flees!!  James 4:7

Those who refuse or neglect to yield to God’s purpose and plan for change in their lives, plainly show by their behavior that they are not serious about following Him.  No amount of “confession” or using “holy language” can take the place of actual practice!  God is not only a God of His Word…but a God of ACTION!  We are called to be as He is in that respect, also.

We are realizing in the crucial, present times in which we are living that such an attitude is our responsibility and our duty before the Lord.  There is no room for escape from such a sobering exhortation.  It leaves no excuse for any lukewarm, lazy, sideline spectator who might find themselves in the company of true followers of the Lord!  Strong warning and implicit instruction to live a changed life are found throughout the Word of God.  Their primary intent is to make us a people “fit and ready” for such a time as this!

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come!”  1 Timothy 4:6 (NIV)

Any training done under the direction of the Master Trainer has specific purpose.  He does not waste our time or His.  He expects and gets results from His training purposes; and as we submit ourselves willingly to them, our lives begin to take on that characteristic order and discipline that is the hallmark of one who lives his or her life...in the Spirit!
